Becky joined the Bryan YMCA in the summer of 2012 when a friend asked her to come along and provide support in her efforts to become healthier. Prior to joining the YMCA Becky led a sedentary lifestyle, and many times was not out of bed until late morning/early afternoon. Now Becky walks for an hour in her neighborhood prior to participating in an 8-9:00AM class four days a week.
Becky’s two sisters and mother all have diabetes. She helps her mother with daily insulin shots and frequent monitoring of her blood glucose levels throughout the day. When Becky’s doctor told her she was pre-diabetic, she knew she wanted to make a change to stop the progression toward diabetes. Becky learned about the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program from flyers and discussion with staff at Bryan YMCA.
Becky enrolled in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program in August of 2013. Here are some of Becky’s successes:
Attended 100% of the sessions
Increased her physical activity level and time
Lost 35.8pounds which is 19.4% of her body weight
Decreased her HbA1c from 6.2 to 5.3
No longer takes any blood pressure medicine
Reduced her cholesterol medicine by ½
Feels better with more energy
Prior to this program, her weight yo-yo’d most of her life but Becky has continued to lose weight since completing the Diabetes Prevention Program and has surpassed her goal of losing 80 pounds. When she faces a challenge, she remembers key point form the program such as keeping a food journal for a few days or thinking about motivation that her Lifestyle Coach Jo shared. While Becky does miss the accountability that the group-setting provided, she now also has her family’s support. Recently she completed her first 5K with her son and daughter-in-law. With the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, Becky HAS prevented diabetes and the lessons that she learned have provided the foundation for her sustainable healthier lifestyle.
