Joye Donovant

For the past six years, I have had my life enriched by serving as the volunteer coordinator for the Reidsville Family YMCA Bright Beginnings Program.  Watching the children excitedly shop for new school clothes and hearing the expressions of appreciation from their parents when we return to the Y with smiling children, feeds my soul for the whole year.  By the time I say goodbye to the last child that leaves the YMCA, I am already looking forward to the next year. Special bonds are made between volunteer shopping buddies and each child as they eat a snack together before loading the bus to go shopping. A relatively quiet ride to the store is transformed into a joyous celebration on the return trip to the YMCA laden with bags of outfits that the children can hardly wait to wear to school. A new book bag, school supplies, and school clothes that they helped to pick out give the children the confidence and self-esteem that all children deserve to begin their first day of school with a positive attitude toward their peers, teachers, and academics.  It is also heartwarming when I call many of the same donors year after year and they do not hesitate to show how much they care about the children in our community by making another contribution. After all, the project would not be possible without our devoted donors and volunteer shopping buddies.  Thank you, Reidsville Y for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful program that helps dozens of children in our community each year start school with a “Bright Beginning.”
